How to Open an Activity

If you intend to start working as a self-employed worker, it is crucial to be aware of the applicable tax rules, as they differ from those applied to employees with a dependent employment contract.

The first step is to open your activity with the Tax Authorities, but do you know how to proceed? On this page, we guide you step by step to simplify the entire bureaucracy.

There are also significant differences between opening an activity with simple accounting or organized accounting, which makes it crucial to understand all the deadlines and obligations to be met throughout the year to ensure your tax situation is regularized.

Follow these steps:

  1. At the entity’s office.
To open an activity in person, simply go to the Tax Office in your area of residence and present your Citizen Card and Bank Identification Number (NIB).

When it is your turn, just inform them that you want to open an activity and specify which accounting regime you want to adopt.

It is important to note that this request should be made before you start working independently or, at the very least, before issuing invoices.

  2. Accessing the Tax Portal.

    1. Access the Tax Portal.
The first step to open an activity is to access the Tax Portal through the website and log in. In the upper right corner, there is an option “Log In.” When you click, you will be asked for your taxpayer number and access password.

If this is your first time accessing this Portal, you will need to select the “Register” option. After registering, you will receive an access password by mail.

    2. Activate the tax services.
After logging in, you will be directed to the main page of the Portal. Select the option “All Services,” click on “Start Activity,” and then on “Submit Declaration.” A new page will be displayed when you press the “Submit Declaration of Start of Activity” button.

    3. Complete the start of activity declaration.
You will receive a form to fill out, following the steps provided. Although some information will be pre-filled, it is important to confirm the information and ensure that the mandatory fields are properly filled out, such as the indication of the Economic Activity Classification (CAE) code, the expected start date of the activity, the VAT regime, and the choice between simple or organized accounting.

    4. Submit the declaration and validate the start of the activity.
After filling out the form, carefully verify all the information and submit the declaration. After a few days, you will receive a letter with the validation code required to confirm the start of the activity. Once received, simply access the Portal again and confirm the operation.
